Song

this is the cover of the song we originally wanted to choose, we couldn't get the original song by Mumford and Sons, as it would be hard to get permission from a well-known band. We thought this cover was the best when researching through covers for this song, we wanted a male to sing the song as the voice is slow and deep fitting with the mood and atmosphere of the video we are wanting to portray.
We all got together as a group and researched through youtube and music sites to find the appropriate cover of the song we though that would fit within the theme of our music video and the voice of the artist that could portray the atmosphere of it as well.

The singer in this video has given us permission to use his cover of the song.

black and white

The reason behind us wanting to do a black and white colour as the main shoot is to emphasise the atmosphere and meaning of the song onto the screen and the story behind the character on the screen. By using black and white it instantly gives a dark and eerie setting, to the shots and by editing the lightness and contrast of the black and white image on the screen we can also signify different moods and feelings of the character.
We researched music videos of our genre that have used black and white colouring in different shots of their music video and seen the way they use this effect to symbolise different moods across to the audience.

marina and the diamonds

This screenshot is from "Primadonna Girl" by Marina and the Diamonds, this shot comes across as the characters being distant and pondering about something this comes across this way as she is looking away from the camera, most of half her face is darken off implying something is upsetting her. She is in the foreground with the background of the streets and lights surrounding her are blurred out, keeping the audiences eye directly onto her, keeping the audience within the story of the music video and onto the character on the screen that is acting the story of the lyrics.
I think this is something we need to take into consideration about the way the character acts with the camera towards to audience, and the impression the audience get without the character telling them what they are actually thinking. The use of lighting is important as well as it can give more emphasis into the mood of the character and the use of the black and white colouring through the whole shot adds to the dreary atmosphere.

Birdy

The black and white effect in the Birdy video "People Help the People" gives an innocent suggesting to the audience, the lighting throughout the video is very bright and shows no darkness on the main characters face throughout the video implying pureness and innocence  this is something that we could in corrupt into our music video as due to the song "Lover's Eyes" it is about a relationship falling apart, and innocence portrayal could give a good presentation of our character to represent her personality and character in the story of the lyrics.

The Civil Wars

this video by Civil Wars "Barton Hollow" the black and white effect make the video seem very clean cut and sleek, the shots throughout the video look really neat and professional as the colours are only based on the two colours so colours arent bursting out from the screen and the audiences eyes keep on the characters and settings around as all the colours are the same.

Damien Rice- The Blower's Daughter

As soon as the video starts the audience see this dark and dreary setting with the use of the colour effect of sepia in the setting, using the long shot the audience can see the full surroundings of the person on the sing the setting of the man in this opening surrounding gives the feeling of isolation and distance within this person giving the audience a feel of how this person is feeling. He is dressed in all black where he almost fades into the background because of the brown background giving this depressed and upsetting atmosphere to the song letting the audience know the mood of this song, this is something that would be interesting to incorupt into our video as we are using a song similar to this mood so by instantly telling the audience the type of song and mood this video is going to be gives that insight of wanting to know the ending of where this person is going to end up.

I think this shot is again what we can use in our music video, because the setting is in the same setting that we want to use on the beach and viewing the sea, it gives a isolated and lost setting to the video, the two shot of the man looking at the women in the background gives the audience a personal insight of the realtionship. It's a romantic setting of two people over looking on to the sea however the use of the dark earthy colours bring the atmosphere of depression and misery which could imply to the audience about the troubles between the relationship and that there is a story behind how they became like this.

the camera shot cuts to the women to have the in the foreground of the picture to where she was standing in the previous shot, the shot is slow motion with her hair blowing in this wing, she is wearing dark clothing and the medium shot of her face shows her expressions, her whole presence presents her as being sad and upset. The slow motion effect is interesting and I think adds to the atmosphere of the video in being dreary and troubled, I think is something we should use in our editing as our song is similar to this song and I think works well with showing emotion to a person in a shot.

Throughout the video there are numerous closeup shots of the couples face, showing the emotion and expression in their face to suggest what has happened within their relationship, I think because of us using a song like "Lover's Eyes" and it being about a relationship that is similar to this the use of the closeups and extreme closeups of the face is important to symbolise to the audience the emotion of the characters in the music video.

They use similar expressions of sadness to express to the audience that they have been in a fight or arguement, giving them hints behind the story of how they ended up like this.

The video uses cross dissolve to cut between each story of couples that are showing, I think this is a good way to show the past as it seem as if they are looking back into the past into the relationship that they used to be in and into the present tense and how they are know, it's a good way to link the different shots together. This is something that we need to think of including into our music video as we are going to use the idea of present and past tense of the couples relationship throughout our video.

The video is for a music video for a film and uses the clips of the film, the clips of the film are very vibrant and bright compared to the sepia effect of the artist singing. The mood of the clips of the film seem happy and more warm in contrast to the clips of the artist, this shows us that our idea of using the black and white effect of the present tense to imply to the audience that this person in the shot is unhappy comparing to the clips of how she is with the boy in the other shots this shows us that this works in using different coloured images to symbolise the mood and atmosphere of the shoot.

Reseach in Logos

when researching other artist's logos we discovered that the name of the artist is the logo and identity of their name. They all use bold and eye-catching font to make each one of their names stand out and all have different styles and text to make their logo more personal to their style of music and songs.

Lana Del Rey is well known for her sophiscated and old fashion image in style and also her songs, by using this type of text links towards her image as an artist, the writing is simple yet by having it very bold and stand outs on the page, the use of black as well make it appeal to the eye. As it is in italics it adds to the old fashioned image, also giving it a feminine and classy style.

Again with Ellie Goulding this image is shown across all her albums and singles, so is iconic for our name for the writing to be in this particular style. She makes the writing bold and stand out on each one of her different cds, however just changing the colours of the singles songs to match the different themes that run with each one but still keeping with the same typograhy. I think this is important to keep the same text throughout each different product we do for our artist as the text/image will become regonisable for our artist, I like the idea of changing the text colour to keep within the style of the products as it gives an edge and it links with what we our promoting it with but still keeping with the same text.

We found with this research that images are hardly ever used for the logo of the artist, so by having the idea of using the red balloon and the artists name as the string coming down from it will give us that unique twist to our artist and will make our logo stand out within our genre of indie pop music.

Logo

this is the rough sketch of the logo design we are wanting to use for our album cover to represent our artist. It is the iconic image of the balloon which will also be red for the logo in the video, so we will be continuing the theme and making the links that are recognisable and easy to associated for our artist. This logo will be included on our album digi-pak and magazine article so this image will be the main symbol and representative of the artist and will be seen in all their promotional packs.
We are wanting to write the artists name in the string of the balloon, so again the artist and symbol will always be linked, we think this image is unique and different to what other artists in this particular genre are using to represent themselves as a band. We need to make sure the writing isnt over shadowed by the brightness of the red balloon so by using bold text will help it stand out and still catch the eye of the audience including the redness of the balloon.

We will be using photoshop to help make our sketch design of this logo to look more professional for our album, digi-pak and advert in the magazine.

Balloon

In our black and white shots we are wanting to use a balloon to symbolize the love this girl has for the boy, throughout the video she will be holding it travelling around with it as if is holding onto her and eventually by the end of the video we see her let go of the balloon. To make this balloon stand out of the shots we want the balloon to be the only coloured image in the black and white shots to make it stand out, the balloon will be eye catching and grab the audiences attention as their eyes will instantly be drawn to the brightness of the balloon, this image will be iconic for the video and because of this we want to use the red balloon as the logo for our album and artist as it is the main thing that stands out in the video so it can be easily recognised and associated with the artist as it is viewed in the video.

as seen in this picture it instantly draws the eye to the balloon which therefore in our video will bring attention to what is going to happen with the balloon and the storyline behind it.
Using the colour red symbolises love but also the pain and danger of being in love which will link with our song and idea for our video.

Thursday 20 September 2012

We have discussed the atmosphere and mood we are wanting to percieve through our music video, because of the songs we are going to use it is very down beat and a slow melody as it is about two lovers loosing touch.
The black and white picture of the music video will help show this sad and dreary image we are wanting to portray to the audience, but during the song it sometimes picks up the beat of the song and I think this is where we want to add the coloured shots of the body language between the girl and boy as if it is flashbacks.

We think by using the contrast of the black and white shots as well as using the coloured shots will make both of the colours stand out and begun eye catching to the audience as they will be switching between the two repeatively.
The colour shot will be in a home made video effect giving it a more personal effect and allowing the audience to have a look into the relationship between the two people. Body language will be the main factor in these different shots we want the audience to see the hands, arms, and parts of the face smiling and laughing to show the love between the two people it makes it more personal and sense of vunerablity in that a couple so happy can change dramtically to the girl walking all alone on a beach, we want the shots to be flashbacks of the girl looking back, so the warm and vibrant colours we are wanting to use will show the happy and loved up times she was having with this boy against the harshness of the blacks when she is on her own, also the scenery will help this dramatic change by using the sea crashing up against the rocks continue the effect we want to percieve of unhappiness and pain, while the scenery behind the couple in the flashbacks will be bright and almost glowing as if its a dream.

Album Cover Branding

Prince

Prince is world wide known artist, the main symbol that stands out from the album is the Prince symbol, which is a combination of male and females, which in the public eye he has been viewed as being both male but feminine, the colour of yellow is neutral genders so adds to the meaning of the combination of the two symbols. The symbol stands out against the dark colours of the space city behind it, it could imply that Prince is bold and catches everyones attention making his mark. The circle of women around the symbol makes as if it is some sort of religious memorial and they are worshiping his symbol, there is no words or name of Prince due to him not wanting to be a name, so by having this bold symbol he has now become this renowned symbol instead of his previous name.

I think by having just a symbol to represent our artist/album will give it an idenity and brand our artist in a simple image that audiences will automatically recognise to be associated with our particular artist.

Song Survey

For our music video we have selected a number of songs that we feel would fit perfectly within our genre of music and also the type of music we are picturing to shoot. We have chose recent songs so we will need to find a good cover and hopefully be allowed to use their covers after we have asked permission. The songs we have chosen are similar to each, very slow and a light hearted melody also the lyrics talk about lost love or being in love which is typical in the indie genre of music we have chosen to do, so because they are so similar we thought that doing a survey and asking the public in what they think would be a suitable song to use as then we can look at their ideas and then discuss what the public would want to listen to.

The Last Unicorn by Passenger

Lovers Eyes by Mumford and Sons

Higher Love by James Vincent McMorrow

the main video that i thought would be best for our particular video would be lovers eyes as the concept of our is the relationship between to people, and the title "lovers eyes" instantly give the audience the idea that this video will be about two people, also this gives us more ideas to include in our video of using the couple within the video and how their relationship. I think using a Mumford and Sons song gives us a more wider audience to target with as it is a band that has an wider audience of all ages as their songs are folky yet indie at the same time which is listened to by a range of audiences.
All these videos have the elements of a video containing a love story between two people, however 'Lovers Eyes' goes through different beats and pace throughout the song going from fast to slow which will allow us to use different camera movements and edits to give the effect of  different moods that are in the song.

Kelly

Due to circumstances Kelly is having to join our group as she would be working on our own, and we thought because she is using the same genre of music as us it would be good to collaberate and have more ideas that she was previously going to use with her partner with us, as it will give us a better outlook of how we can carry our project and picture the final outcome. This will allow us to do more research and planning, as more jobs can be done such as: more camera filmers doing the actual shooting and also behind the scene shooting.
