shots

We did some more shots today, concentrating on how we want to portray our character on the screen when she is reminising into the past. The camera quality is much better then the previous shots we recently did due to the outside enviroment, this is something we need to take into consideration as when looking at the closeup shots we werent happy with the quality and thought the picture would put a negative effect on our final piece, however as our final video is going to shot mainly outside due to being shot on the beach the quality of the camera will be similar to these shots done.

We wanted to interpurt some of the shots that we thought we would use within our final video, in our storyboard we have a shot of the main character looking out onto the sea over a barrier, so we visual see what the shots would look like before the main shoot. The use of different camera angles show us what shot would work best, I think the first screen shot of the medium closeup works well by showing all of the characters body language and the way she positions herself on the barrier will emphasise the mood she is in and the way that comes across to the audience. However i think the second screen shot of the closeup low angled shot of the character works best as the audience can clearly see the expressions in her face which will make a more clear image of how the character is feeling, also by having a low angled shot makes her become the main focus of the screen, she is taking up most of the shot so the audience are instantly drawn to her and make her seem more important and how this is the character the audience are going to follow.

this shot is interesting, the audience can see the character and also the surroundings she is in, having both the expression of sadness of the girl and also the setting of the sea will emphaise the isolation and loneliness of the character. She is looking out into the distance signifying she is lost and trying to find her way but looking out onto the sea can imply that she is unsure of where she is as the sea is a ever going around the world.

The shot below will show the main location of the shoot. Again bringing this sense of isolation and lostness to the character as she will on her own on this barrier looking out into the distance. Having the setting on the beach will bring the atmosphere of pain due to the waves crashing up against the rocks and waves coming in implying distruction and hurt in this characters life. A beach is associated with a romantic setting however with the colour setting of black and white we will use and the weather being winter, it will gives this mood onto the screen that this character is experiencing misery and a depressed atmosphere is giving off to the audience implying to the audience the troubles of this relationship and insight to what she is feeling.

Summartive

This week as a group we have developed more into our ideas, we have concentrated on the different types of shots we want to include by going out and doing pratice shots and the way different angles and movements would work with the ideas we are wanting to use in our final music video. We have done some close up shots of the main girl in the music video and how we want to position on screen, this had us doing numerous different shots in angles and different types of shots to see which one would work best for each particular shot. We also praticed how the couple would interact with each other on screen when the girl is looking back into the past, we used the idea of body language that we have wanted to use throughout to see if this would work on camera and the message it would give off to the audience, we thought when doing the practice shots that by using the idea of body language worked well as it was sutle but still gave the picture that this couple were once in love.

We have started planning our story board and deciding on which shots would be appropriate and how we are going to tranission each shot when the character on screen is reminising into the past of her relationship and how we are going to signify this this tranission to the audience so they know this is what is happen.

Poster

Ellie Goulding- Lights

this is the poster for Ellie Goulding's lastest album "Lights" the album is similar to her album cover images and the images throughout her booklet in the digi-pak so she keeps within the theme of her album. The image has the typical conventions of indie pop genre in having a natural and outside setting, keeping within these conventions. She keeps with a similar main image that she has included on her album, with the same lights, and style allowing the audience to recognise her with these particular images as they are so similar. The colours on the image are the same, the use of the warm colours of yellows and oranges to create this natural and vibrant picture for the audience. The main image takes up most of the picture and so blank spaces our left, bringing forward the image more as it is the image that the audience instantly see first, also the writing is both the same on the album cover and poster keeping with the recognisable typography for the audience to instantly associated with this particular artist., the writing is more illuminated then the background image bringing that forward and eye catching for the audience, the composition of the artist's name is central of the poster which makes it more bold and central point for the poster.

Florence and the Machine- Lungs

The Florence and Machine poster is quite striking and bold, the album is called "Lungs" and the artist has incorrupted the album name within the image of the poster and physically shows her lungs on top of her skin, which makes it stand out and unique as this isn't seen in albums regulrly, the symoblism of the word "Lungs" for album could imply to her singing and the work the lungs have to do to produce her voice and she is almost dedicated her album to her lungs for allowing her to have this singing voice.
The pose Florence is doing, makes her look innocent and pure, she is dressed in a green/white dress where she stands out against the blackness and dark greens of the setting behind her, also the pinks of the flowers behind her make her stand out more to the contrast of her hair and palness of the skin, i think this is a good a effect as the artist has thought of colours that would contrast with herself that would make her standout and more bold on the poster towards the audience.
The writing is simple and bold, the use of the white text against the black background make the writing stand out and unmissable and easy for the audience to read.

The typpgraphy of her artists name is symbolic for her name, and is easily recognisable for this particular artist as she has used the name text, style and colour in all her album so is iconic this artist. I think this is something we need to take into consideration and make her name the almost iconic image for the artist as it the main thing that audiences remember as the name and the way it looks and what it is.

With our poster we need to remember the conventions of a indie pop artist, and make sure the audience can identify the genre of music they belong to from just looking at the image, also we need to concentrate on the name and the way we present it to the audience as it is the main thing that people see on the page as well as the image which we need to make bold and striking to grab the audiences attention.

shots

We wanted to use some practice shots to get the idea of what we wanted for our shots to look like in our music video, we concentrated on the close ups that we thought we would in corrupt in our video. The close ups would be mainly of the couple, and how they interact with each other this includes: hands, smiles, eyes and other types of body language that we would want in it.

these two extreme close up are the type of shots we want to include when the girl in the video is reminiscing into her past, using the extreme close ups of the smiles and laughter of the characters will show the audience the past relationship she had with her boyfriend previously, we will also include these same shots with the boy and also with the couple together to indicate to the audience what type of relationship they had by expressions and body language.

These two shots of the couple holding hands is something we will also include within our video, the use of body language we all think is important to put a positive message towards the audience about this relationship of these two people. It gives a romantic and happy portrayal of the relationship to the audience.

this shot was taken as in the music video we wanted to include a shot of the girl sitting alone on a bench, the image shows her swinging back and forth her feet as if she is pondering and thinking of something while she is alone. We wanted this shot for the girl to be alone as we think it will give an isolated and lonely setting for the girl as she will be left alone with her reminiscing thoughts into her past relationship.

Joy Williams- One of Those Days

this video is similar to the idea of our group wanting to include both black and white imagery with coloured imagery, this effect is rare to find in our indie pop genre so by using this effect we will be making a unique and different approach to the indie pop genre in music videos.
The mood of the song is different to ours however it uses the idea that we are wanting to portray of using the two different effect to represent two different stories, and similarly this concentrates on a couple which is also what we want to include within our video, so by looking at how this video uses the relationship and the coloured effect will give us ideas in what to include in the content on of video.

As soon as the video starts there is a black and white low angle shot of a man walking towards the camera, the camera cuts off his face so there is an intrigue to who and what this man is doing, he is dressed in all black giving this unknowing and threatening character to the viewer. He stands out against the background as he is more dark due to his clothes contrasting against the light grey and white setting.

the camera jump cuts onto the man's face to a medium shot, the audience still have no idea of his purpose within the video as the music hasn't started yet, this effect creates a narrative before the lyrics of the song are telling you. I think this is a good effect to get the audience intrigued into the video before the song has actually started, I think this is something that we could include into our video as we have a scenery that is very bold a story for the audience before the song starts can set the tone of the music video.

As soon as the music starts the editing on the shoot rewinds and the character begins to walk backwards again this draws the attention of viewer in more as they are then wanting to know how the story began. The camera then pans onto the singer, the colour of the screen is vibrant and bold with the use of the natural colours of the greenery setting. The artists stands out against the background of the earthy colours as she is wearing bright reds and blues so draws the viewers attention onto her as she is not fading into the background. The singer is talking to the audience so makes them become more involved with the music video, this is something that we could include in our video as in our video we are telling a story of a girl and how her relationship ended so by talking directly to the audience might be a good way to get the story of the couple forward better to the audience, and make them have more empathy for the couple.

The use of close ups in both the black and white effect and colour effect show the contrast between how the different effects represent each shot.
The black and white shot makes the man in the shit look angry and the expression in his face of anger is emphasised by the black and white effect. Contrasting with the shot below of the artist close-up, the vibrant colours against the black and white give a warm and bright feeling to the shot. The idea of us having the two different contrasts of colour will work within this effect as we are wanting to show a sad shots with the black and white effect and then happy and joyful shots when using the colour effect, and looking at this video shows that this effect of contrasting colours works with this technique.

Pitch Video

this video was used within our presentation of our pitch, the videos shows the different shots out of numerous music videos in our genre that we think would be suited to use with our music video. Over the top of the shots we have included the song that we are wanting to use with our video.
The shots are very natural and the setting for most of them are outside which is a running theme throughout all the music video we have been researching and analyising in the genre of indie pop. The colour of each shots are all warm and vibrant with the use of the natural lights and colours of oranges, yellows and green which is shown mostly in the beginning of the video in the Ben Howard shots. The black and white shots that are taken from "No Hope" by The Vaccines show the similar effect that we want to create using the black and white effect within our video, and by contrasting the black and white with the warm colours of the previous shots of video show the effect of the warmness against the sharpness of the black and white and how much each shot stands out against one another.
All the videos concentrate on the artist, which is something that we need to take into consideration as it is a typical conventions of this genres music videos, so by using this technique we can make our video fit more with the conventions of an indie pop video.

When seeing the song over the top if gives us the idea of what we can include within our own video that would fit within the song.

this digi-pak keeps with the typical conventions of an indie pop video/artist, the lighting on the covers are very natural and warm with the use of greens, yellows and blues bring a soft and feminine colour to the album fitting with the artist.
The image of the artist is in the centre of the image, she is taking up most of the image which draws the attention of the audience directly onto her, the image of her has most of the light shone on her face which makes her light up and stand out on the page. This is a good effect as it makes the audience look to the image straight away as there eyes are forwarded to the light.
The theme of colours run throughout the booklet, the booklet is simple with the use of black text and bolder text to emphasise the titles of each song. In the booklet there are more images of the artist Ellie Goulding the images are similar to the front covers, with the use of the natural lighting and setting for each photo, the outside scenery theme still continues with the typical conventions of an indie pop artist.
The CD is bright yellow, which is eye catching and stands out as the colour of the cd is completely different to the colours used on the covers of the album.
