Joy Williams- One of Those Days

this video is similar to the idea of our group wanting to include both black and white imagery with coloured imagery, this effect is rare to find in our indie pop genre so by using this effect we will be making a unique and different approach to the indie pop genre in music videos.
The mood of the song is different to ours however it uses the idea that we are wanting to portray of using the two different effect to represent two different stories, and similarly this concentrates on a couple which is also what we want to include within our video, so by looking at how this video uses the relationship and the coloured effect will give us ideas in what to include in the content on of video.

As soon as the video starts there is a black and white low angle shot of a man walking towards the camera, the camera cuts off his face so there is an intrigue to who and what this man is doing, he is dressed in all black giving this unknowing and threatening character to the viewer. He stands out against the background as he is more dark due to his clothes contrasting against the light grey and white setting.

the camera jump cuts onto the man's face to a medium shot, the audience still have no idea of his purpose within the video as the music hasn't started yet, this effect creates a narrative before the lyrics of the song are telling you. I think this is a good effect to get the audience intrigued into the video before the song has actually started, I think this is something that we could include into our video as we have a scenery that is very bold a story for the audience before the song starts can set the tone of the music video.

As soon as the music starts the editing on the shoot rewinds and the character begins to walk backwards again this draws the attention of viewer in more as they are then wanting to know how the story began. The camera then pans onto the singer, the colour of the screen is vibrant and bold with the use of the natural colours of the greenery setting. The artists stands out against the background of the earthy colours as she is wearing bright reds and blues so draws the viewers attention onto her as she is not fading into the background. The singer is talking to the audience so makes them become more involved with the music video, this is something that we could include in our video as in our video we are telling a story of a girl and how her relationship ended so by talking directly to the audience might be a good way to get the story of the couple forward better to the audience, and make them have more empathy for the couple.

The use of close ups in both the black and white effect and colour effect show the contrast between how the different effects represent each shot.
The black and white shot makes the man in the shit look angry and the expression in his face of anger is emphasised by the black and white effect. Contrasting with the shot below of the artist close-up, the vibrant colours against the black and white give a warm and bright feeling to the shot. The idea of us having the two different contrasts of colour will work within this effect as we are wanting to show a sad shots with the black and white effect and then happy and joyful shots when using the colour effect, and looking at this video shows that this effect of contrasting colours works with this technique.

  1. Some good ideas here. I think you could very easily shoot a video like this (in fact, I think the video itself is a little bland - the main focus of interest is why the black and white sequence is run backwards!). I like the idea of the contrast. Have a think about how you might replicate the range of shot types which have been used, and how you might create a similar effect with colour (you might, for example, ramp up the saturation).
