Story Board

the storyboard gives us a clear idea of what we want to include in our music video, as the story board shows us there are clear indications that the video will have two stories within one, and the different colours and effect of style of videoing will make this a clear opposite from one another. We have used mostly close ups and extreme close ups to show the relationship between the two character and how they interact with each other to make it more personal for the audience giving a secret insight into the relationship. The red balloon is significant throughout the whole video as it is the main iconic image that stands outs in the video as it is out of place and eye catching compared to the scenery behind the character.

The cloud that we are wanting to use will be rewind implying she is going back to the past (reminiscing) about her past relationship, I think this is an effective image to use as it is a clear indication that the character is looking back in time.

Location Photos

these photos are from the location we will be shooting our beach scenes within the music video, these shots convey very naturalistic and realistic imagery to the audience which they could picture themseleves in and therefore relating to the character as they may have been in the situation and in this "norm" surrounding. When these were photographed it was around 4pm, the light is very vibrant and warm showing us that the light when shooting is the most important part of the video, as even though it is going to be edited in black and white, the light from the sun still reflects on scene and can bring more emphaises or highlighting different moods that the character is feeling.
These pictures give us a open mind of where we can shoot as this is a large location and give us variety in what shots and movements we can direct within our music video. I think the location creates a isolated yet romantic feel to the shots, there is noone around bringing the isolated and depressed feeling towards the audience, but yet the beach looks perfect and untouched bringing a peaceful and pretty scenery to the audience, and wanting them to come to this place.
If we want to suggest this mood towards the audience we will need to make sure we pick a day that is similar to the day shot in the picture as the message wont be percieved to the audience.

VERY Rough Idea

This is just a rough idea of how we want to include in our music video to come across to the audience, we have used the black and white effect contrasting against the colour effect to show the mood and atmosphere change in the different shots, the black and white shows that the character on scene is reflecting into the past, also the use of the different shots of the face have helped show this depressed and fat distance mood this character is in. We used the shots that we previously shot in the weeks to make this video, i think the types of shot we used worked well with the mood we were trying to convey to the audience, the different angles helped us look at what worked well and what didn’t i think the most effective shot is the low angled shot as the character is central of the screen, her facial expressions show she is sad and upset which is clear to the audience, the lighting of the shot has her face in darkness this emphasises the upset and depressed nature of the character while the background is light and clear which could signify that there is light at the end of tunnel foreshadowing the end of the video or what she used to be like again using the idea of colour to reflect and contrast the atmosphere and messages of the character in the video.

I think the way we have used the coloured shots and the black and white shots transitions between the shots are eye grabbing as there is an immediate stand out to the colours which grabs the audience’s attention and make them see a story inside the story making them become more interested in the turn out of the story. The shots compared to the character on her own show a complete difference in personality, she is very down and unhappy in the black and white shots while in then coloured shots the audience see she is happy and lively because of "young" love again making the audience more intrigued to how she has gotten from them till now.
We used jump cuts for the transitions from shot to shot, jumping from story to story. I think when it comes to the final editing we need to make the transitions more realistic and how they would be in a music video as the fast cuts could become confusing for the audience, however we have tried to avoid this by using the different colour effect which I think have made a clear difference between the stories.
Within the coloured shots we have used a cross dissolve on the smiles of the couples, the over lapping of the smiles could imply that they were once interwinded with each other, but also the fading of the smiles could suggest that there love has fading and the love that they once had brought them to smile but now it is gone. I think it is important how we percieve this "perfect" relationship that these two people used to have to emphasise the pain and heartbreak she has now.

The black and white shot at the end where the character is sitting on the bench works well, I think it brings a more personal feel to the audience as it is if the audience is watching her and moving towards her as if they were there making them more involved witht the video. The home videoing effect we want to use would be with the coloured shots as it will give a personal insight of the relationship that noone would ever see and make the audience have a connection with the characters making them feel more empathy for how the character is now.

The song works well over the top of the video, it more upbeat and quicker to what a typical indie love song would be like, and contrasting it over a depressed and moody video highlights the meaning of the song more and makes both the video and song stand out more as they are contrasting with each other even though they are showing the same message but in two different ways.

This rough idea gives us the ideas in what we could use within our music video and what types of shots fit within the song and how the song we want to use fits within the ideas we want to use for it. I think the idea of the black and white contrasting against the colour is the strongest part of our music video and we need to ensure that we make this the highlight of our video by using the colours to convey the atmosphere of the video and to help emphasise the mood by the shots and how the character/s are percieved on screen by the composition and expression they use.
As this is a rough idea we havent used a variety of shots that we want to use in our final project we need to make sure that we use all the appropriate shots that we help make our video eye catching and stand out to the audience, as our video is set on a beach the most important part is to show the location as it is a bold location to use for a shoot, by using establishing shots, extreme longs to show where we are shooting we help make our video stand out more as it is a unique place to shoot.

Treatment

Plotline

Our song is about the struggle between a relationship and how a perfect relationship that started and now ended and the hurt they are feeling, because of meaning of the song we thought by using this song we could make a strong music video out of the lyrics of the song.
Our plot of the music video, is that the audience will follow a day of a girl that has gone through this heartbreak and how she is coping with what she is going through, the location of the shoot is in a beach setting so we will be shooting the girl walking along the beach and around the seaside giving this isolated and lonely atmosphere to the shoot.

While the girl is walking around we want to show the realtionship that she had and have her reminising into the past showing how her realtionship used to be and to how she is now, we want to use home videos to show couple together to the audience giving it a more personal insight to how the couple were, also in this shot we will be concentrating on the body language between the two characters to show the audience the closeness and love these people once had with other eg. holding hands, smiles, eyes. These small gestures between the two character make a bigger image into the love of this couple. The shots between the home video and the main shoot will show the contrast to the character and how her mood and character has changed from then to now suggesting the huge impact this heartbreak has given her, and also the clear difference between these shots will be that the home videoing will be in colour to give off a vibrant and warm colour of happiness and joy she had with this boy and then now we will be shooting in black and white to emphaise the upset and misery she is currently having.

Costumes

When researching we found that numerous videos used vintage clothing for the artist to wear, the females artist would wear mainly dresses giving a more feminine feeling to the video, but also linking to their style of music and setting of the music video. The styling of the artists make the video look more appealing as they are smart and sleek with the clothing and accessories are wearing. These conventions of the indie pop videos are something we need to include into ours as the audience can easily associated the clothing with a particular genre of music.

We want our character to portray the indie pop genre artist off through the video, so by dressing her in floral outfits and dresses will give this vintage feel off to the audience and link to the conventions of this particular genre. We will dress our main actor in floral dresses so she looks feminine and have a vulnerable and lost feel to the character as she will be dressed up however she is only walking down to the beach, making her stand out as her outfit wont be associated to what someone would be seen down the beach in. The clothing will be dark fitting with the atmosphere of the black and white effects on the screen linking to the upset and dreary mood we are perceiving to the audience, and her clothes will reflect this atmosphere by wearing colours such as: black and dark blues implying she is in this dark place that she is trying to recover from. Whereas in the home video where the colour on the screen will be warm and vibrant we also want the character to show the drastic contrast to how she was then and now so we will dress her in light colours such as: pinks, whites, yellows, reds to imply the happiness and each colour represents something warm eg. yellow- sunshine, bright lights and reds/pinks- love and romance.

this is a costume that would be similar to what we would want the main character to wear on the beach, with the colours of the blacks and dark colours on the dress to emphasise the mood of the setting we are putting onto the audience and reflecting how she is feeling.
Contrasting to this outfit where it is bright and colourful to the eye and stands out from the colour to the audience against the harsh black of the previous dress. Which I think will emphasises the mood of each shot more as the character herself is reflecting the mood.  Also the fact this particular dress has a cut out heart change in the back of it signifies more to the audience the love the characters had for each other representing in this symbol on herself.

Props

Throughout the vidoe she will be carrying a red balloon, and this is the main symbol for the artist and this particular album, the balloon will symbolise the love that she has for this boy in her hand, and how she will always be carrying it around with her. This balloon will also stand out to the audience as it will be the only coloured image on the black and white shots. The idea of the balloon we had is that a balloon can easily float away and the balloon/love can easily be taken away from someone.
We will need to make sure this balloon is a bold and bright colour so it will show up on the video, if needed we can use colours such as greens and bright blues and then edit the colour on the software when editing to get the best colour for the balloon and to make it eye catching.

Location Scouting
We will be filming at South Shields, it has a long walk along the beach/rocks and also a lighthouse that we want to somehow include within our video. The beach we are wanting to use is open to the public however not many people go it and due to us filming in the winter it is mostly likely that the general public wont be walking along the beach due to the weather which will help us create this isolated and lonely scene for our shoot. We will be getting establishing shots of the sea and waves to give this striking picture to the music video and make it stand out and setting the scene which we have seen in other indie pop videos where they set the scene and introducing the audience to the location before they bring in the artist/actor on the screen.

shots

We did some more shots today, concentrating on how we want to portray our character on the screen when she is reminising into the past. The camera quality is much better then the previous shots we recently did due to the outside enviroment, this is something we need to take into consideration as when looking at the closeup shots we werent happy with the quality and thought the picture would put a negative effect on our final piece, however as our final video is going to shot mainly outside due to being shot on the beach the quality of the camera will be similar to these shots done.

We wanted to interpurt some of the shots that we thought we would use within our final video, in our storyboard we have a shot of the main character looking out onto the sea over a barrier, so we visual see what the shots would look like before the main shoot. The use of different camera angles show us what shot would work best, I think the first screen shot of the medium closeup works well by showing all of the characters body language and the way she positions herself on the barrier will emphasise the mood she is in and the way that comes across to the audience. However i think the second screen shot of the closeup low angled shot of the character works best as the audience can clearly see the expressions in her face which will make a more clear image of how the character is feeling, also by having a low angled shot makes her become the main focus of the screen, she is taking up most of the shot so the audience are instantly drawn to her and make her seem more important and how this is the character the audience are going to follow.

this shot is interesting, the audience can see the character and also the surroundings she is in, having both the expression of sadness of the girl and also the setting of the sea will emphaise the isolation and loneliness of the character. She is looking out into the distance signifying she is lost and trying to find her way but looking out onto the sea can imply that she is unsure of where she is as the sea is a ever going around the world.

The shot below will show the main location of the shoot. Again bringing this sense of isolation and lostness to the character as she will on her own on this barrier looking out into the distance. Having the setting on the beach will bring the atmosphere of pain due to the waves crashing up against the rocks and waves coming in implying distruction and hurt in this characters life. A beach is associated with a romantic setting however with the colour setting of black and white we will use and the weather being winter, it will gives this mood onto the screen that this character is experiencing misery and a depressed atmosphere is giving off to the audience implying to the audience the troubles of this relationship and insight to what she is feeling.

Summartive

This week as a group we have developed more into our ideas, we have concentrated on the different types of shots we want to include by going out and doing pratice shots and the way different angles and movements would work with the ideas we are wanting to use in our final music video. We have done some close up shots of the main girl in the music video and how we want to position on screen, this had us doing numerous different shots in angles and different types of shots to see which one would work best for each particular shot. We also praticed how the couple would interact with each other on screen when the girl is looking back into the past, we used the idea of body language that we have wanted to use throughout to see if this would work on camera and the message it would give off to the audience, we thought when doing the practice shots that by using the idea of body language worked well as it was sutle but still gave the picture that this couple were once in love.

We have started planning our story board and deciding on which shots would be appropriate and how we are going to tranission each shot when the character on screen is reminising into the past of her relationship and how we are going to signify this this tranission to the audience so they know this is what is happen.

Poster

Ellie Goulding- Lights

this is the poster for Ellie Goulding's lastest album "Lights" the album is similar to her album cover images and the images throughout her booklet in the digi-pak so she keeps within the theme of her album. The image has the typical conventions of indie pop genre in having a natural and outside setting, keeping within these conventions. She keeps with a similar main image that she has included on her album, with the same lights, and style allowing the audience to recognise her with these particular images as they are so similar. The colours on the image are the same, the use of the warm colours of yellows and oranges to create this natural and vibrant picture for the audience. The main image takes up most of the picture and so blank spaces our left, bringing forward the image more as it is the image that the audience instantly see first, also the writing is both the same on the album cover and poster keeping with the recognisable typography for the audience to instantly associated with this particular artist., the writing is more illuminated then the background image bringing that forward and eye catching for the audience, the composition of the artist's name is central of the poster which makes it more bold and central point for the poster.

Florence and the Machine- Lungs

The Florence and Machine poster is quite striking and bold, the album is called "Lungs" and the artist has incorrupted the album name within the image of the poster and physically shows her lungs on top of her skin, which makes it stand out and unique as this isn't seen in albums regulrly, the symoblism of the word "Lungs" for album could imply to her singing and the work the lungs have to do to produce her voice and she is almost dedicated her album to her lungs for allowing her to have this singing voice.
The pose Florence is doing, makes her look innocent and pure, she is dressed in a green/white dress where she stands out against the blackness and dark greens of the setting behind her, also the pinks of the flowers behind her make her stand out more to the contrast of her hair and palness of the skin, i think this is a good a effect as the artist has thought of colours that would contrast with herself that would make her standout and more bold on the poster towards the audience.
The writing is simple and bold, the use of the white text against the black background make the writing stand out and unmissable and easy for the audience to read.

The typpgraphy of her artists name is symbolic for her name, and is easily recognisable for this particular artist as she has used the name text, style and colour in all her album so is iconic this artist. I think this is something we need to take into consideration and make her name the almost iconic image for the artist as it the main thing that audiences remember as the name and the way it looks and what it is.

With our poster we need to remember the conventions of a indie pop artist, and make sure the audience can identify the genre of music they belong to from just looking at the image, also we need to concentrate on the name and the way we present it to the audience as it is the main thing that people see on the page as well as the image which we need to make bold and striking to grab the audiences attention.

shots

We wanted to use some practice shots to get the idea of what we wanted for our shots to look like in our music video, we concentrated on the close ups that we thought we would in corrupt in our video. The close ups would be mainly of the couple, and how they interact with each other this includes: hands, smiles, eyes and other types of body language that we would want in it.

these two extreme close up are the type of shots we want to include when the girl in the video is reminiscing into her past, using the extreme close ups of the smiles and laughter of the characters will show the audience the past relationship she had with her boyfriend previously, we will also include these same shots with the boy and also with the couple together to indicate to the audience what type of relationship they had by expressions and body language.

These two shots of the couple holding hands is something we will also include within our video, the use of body language we all think is important to put a positive message towards the audience about this relationship of these two people. It gives a romantic and happy portrayal of the relationship to the audience.

this shot was taken as in the music video we wanted to include a shot of the girl sitting alone on a bench, the image shows her swinging back and forth her feet as if she is pondering and thinking of something while she is alone. We wanted this shot for the girl to be alone as we think it will give an isolated and lonely setting for the girl as she will be left alone with her reminiscing thoughts into her past relationship.

Joy Williams- One of Those Days

this video is similar to the idea of our group wanting to include both black and white imagery with coloured imagery, this effect is rare to find in our indie pop genre so by using this effect we will be making a unique and different approach to the indie pop genre in music videos.
The mood of the song is different to ours however it uses the idea that we are wanting to portray of using the two different effect to represent two different stories, and similarly this concentrates on a couple which is also what we want to include within our video, so by looking at how this video uses the relationship and the coloured effect will give us ideas in what to include in the content on of video.

As soon as the video starts there is a black and white low angle shot of a man walking towards the camera, the camera cuts off his face so there is an intrigue to who and what this man is doing, he is dressed in all black giving this unknowing and threatening character to the viewer. He stands out against the background as he is more dark due to his clothes contrasting against the light grey and white setting.

the camera jump cuts onto the man's face to a medium shot, the audience still have no idea of his purpose within the video as the music hasn't started yet, this effect creates a narrative before the lyrics of the song are telling you. I think this is a good effect to get the audience intrigued into the video before the song has actually started, I think this is something that we could include into our video as we have a scenery that is very bold a story for the audience before the song starts can set the tone of the music video.

As soon as the music starts the editing on the shoot rewinds and the character begins to walk backwards again this draws the attention of viewer in more as they are then wanting to know how the story began. The camera then pans onto the singer, the colour of the screen is vibrant and bold with the use of the natural colours of the greenery setting. The artists stands out against the background of the earthy colours as she is wearing bright reds and blues so draws the viewers attention onto her as she is not fading into the background. The singer is talking to the audience so makes them become more involved with the music video, this is something that we could include in our video as in our video we are telling a story of a girl and how her relationship ended so by talking directly to the audience might be a good way to get the story of the couple forward better to the audience, and make them have more empathy for the couple.

The use of close ups in both the black and white effect and colour effect show the contrast between how the different effects represent each shot.
The black and white shot makes the man in the shit look angry and the expression in his face of anger is emphasised by the black and white effect. Contrasting with the shot below of the artist close-up, the vibrant colours against the black and white give a warm and bright feeling to the shot. The idea of us having the two different contrasts of colour will work within this effect as we are wanting to show a sad shots with the black and white effect and then happy and joyful shots when using the colour effect, and looking at this video shows that this effect of contrasting colours works with this technique.

Pitch Video

this video was used within our presentation of our pitch, the videos shows the different shots out of numerous music videos in our genre that we think would be suited to use with our music video. Over the top of the shots we have included the song that we are wanting to use with our video.
The shots are very natural and the setting for most of them are outside which is a running theme throughout all the music video we have been researching and analyising in the genre of indie pop. The colour of each shots are all warm and vibrant with the use of the natural lights and colours of oranges, yellows and green which is shown mostly in the beginning of the video in the Ben Howard shots. The black and white shots that are taken from "No Hope" by The Vaccines show the similar effect that we want to create using the black and white effect within our video, and by contrasting the black and white with the warm colours of the previous shots of video show the effect of the warmness against the sharpness of the black and white and how much each shot stands out against one another.
All the videos concentrate on the artist, which is something that we need to take into consideration as it is a typical conventions of this genres music videos, so by using this technique we can make our video fit more with the conventions of an indie pop video.

When seeing the song over the top if gives us the idea of what we can include within our own video that would fit within the song.

this digi-pak keeps with the typical conventions of an indie pop video/artist, the lighting on the covers are very natural and warm with the use of greens, yellows and blues bring a soft and feminine colour to the album fitting with the artist.
The image of the artist is in the centre of the image, she is taking up most of the image which draws the attention of the audience directly onto her, the image of her has most of the light shone on her face which makes her light up and stand out on the page. This is a good effect as it makes the audience look to the image straight away as there eyes are forwarded to the light.
The theme of colours run throughout the booklet, the booklet is simple with the use of black text and bolder text to emphasise the titles of each song. In the booklet there are more images of the artist Ellie Goulding the images are similar to the front covers, with the use of the natural lighting and setting for each photo, the outside scenery theme still continues with the typical conventions of an indie pop artist.
The CD is bright yellow, which is eye catching and stands out as the colour of the cd is completely different to the colours used on the covers of the album.
